Asking For Her Hand: Part 5 – Farewell Dumai

Posted on the February 28th, 2006 under Out and About by

February 20, 2006. Bear heard someone opened the door but Bear was too lazy to open his eyes. Then Bear felt someone kissed his eyebrow. Bear thought he was dreaming so he opened his eyes. He saw Little Lion and quickly hugged her. Then Little Lion told Bear that it was time for Subuh prayer and then Bear realized that he was not dreaming. That was real and that was better than a dream. So, The Lions and Bear performed the prayer together again that morning. That morning, while clearing the prayer mats, Bear found a flattened lizard under Little Lion’s mat. That poor lizard did not even have the time to turn blue or green. It was already cold when Bear picked it up and buried it in the dustbin. Little Lion was just screaming away in disgust.

Soon after that Papa Lion invited all of us for a morning tour around the city of Dumai and the Pertamina housing complex. Bear asked Little Lion whether we should shower first and Little Lion said no. Bear had no problem with that. Again, Little Lion walked down memory lane that morning and Bear just sat there enjoying the view and the history lesson. It was a calm morning. As calm as Bear’s heart going around Dumai with Little Lion and her family.

Little Lion and Bear in Dumai

After the tour, everybody felt hungry and we went for breakfast at Gantino since Little Lion had another craving. That time she wanted to have Lontong Sayur for breakfast. It was rice cakes with some jackfruit gravy and went well with the cow skin crackers. I forgot what do they call the crackers. It was really delicious although Bear disliked jackfruit.

After breakfast, we found out that the front tyre of the panther was flat. Luckily there were people around with the equipment and skills to change the tyre. For a few thousands Rupiah, you could just let them do it for you. While waiting for the tyre to be changed, Little Lion, Mama Lion and Bear went to the ferry office to check in. By the time we got back to the panther, everything was fixed and ready to roll again.

At home, after saying goodbye to Papa Lion who had to go to work, Mama Lion asked Little Lion and Bear to shower since Bear had to be at the jetty by 10 am. After a quick shower and packing, we left for the jetty. Then Mama Lion insisted that Bear bring back something for Mama Bear. We stopped at local store and Mama Lion bought some Lempuk or Durian cakes and Bear got some snacks and drinks while Little Lion settled for her favourite; Magnum ice cream. Little Lion likes it big!

We arrived at the Dumai Port about 10 am. Just nice. We took a photo with Mama Lion and then Bear said goodbye to Mama Lion and Ranto and then kissed Little Lion and walk into the terminal. Once inside, a few people inquired about Little Lion. They thought that Little Lion was already Bear’s wife and asked when would Little Lion come along. On the way to the ferry, two port security personnels ask Bear about his golf game. That was because Bear had run out of shirt and had to wear Papa Lion’s golf t-shirt. Luckily, Papa Lion had a few smaller t-shirts that he could not fit in.

Once on the ferry, Bear started to miss Little Lion very much. A few sms-es later, a box of not-so-nice fried noodles and some snacks from Dumai, Bear fell asleep and woke up in Melaka.

That was one of the best moments in Bear’s life to spend 3 wonderful days in Dumai with Little Lion and her family and Bear would not forget that for the rest of his life.

The End.

Asking For Her Hand: Part 4 – A New Chapter

One by one, the passengers got off the plane and Little Lion was among the last that got down. Mama Lion went out from the waiting area but Bear remained inside. The plan was to jump on Little Lion but somehow she was already expecting Bear to be lurking somewhere not far from Mama Lion. Anyway, a little hug and then Little Lion noticed that Bear was wearing sandals. I told her that they belong to Papa Lion since he didn’t want Bear to go through the trouble of wearing shoes. It took Little Lion quite sometimes to get over her giggling about that…

At the same time Papa Lion had arrived at the airport from the golf course with Ranto. Since Papa Lion and Little Lion were tired, we went straight home. Nothing much happened at home. Papa Lion went of to his room to rest and Little Lion filled her time teasing Bear. Luckily for Little Lion, Bear was unable to give chase since Bear have to behave in that house. After praying maghrib together, The Lions and Bear went for dinner in town.

Little Lion fooling around

We had crabs for the main dish and after dinner, we bought some martabak keju and durian (cheese and durian pancakes). Then Little Lion had a craving for Air Akar, which was a drink made from seaweed. Then we headed home.

Then, it seemed that the moment of truth had finally come. Papa and Mama Lion, together with Little Lion were sitting at the table enjoying the pancakes. Little Lion started to make all the signs to get Bear to say something but Bear just could not say anything, Instead, Bear kept on eating the pancakes, piece by piece. Seriously, Bear had no idea on how to initiate the proposal… Finally, Little Lion told Papa Lion that Bear had something to talk about and all of us moved to the family hall.

Papa Lion sat on the chair facing the TV. Mama Lion sat on a chair next to the TV and she was playing with the remote control, changing channels. Little Lion sat on the floor across Bear who sat on a stool, holding a big pillow. Papa Lion was smiling and Little Lion was still making all the signs to start. Bear was still blank. There was some moments of silence. However, the silence was so loud that Bear started to sweat profusely. Time passed so slowly and everyone was waiting for Bear to say something. It was one of the most tensed moments that Bear had ever had in his life. Eventually, Bear gathered all his strength and said:

“Saya mau yang itu… anak papa… yang itu…”

(I want that one… that daughter of yours…)

… while pointing to Little Lion.

Oh my God! Bear actually said that and there was nothing else to do but hide behind the big pillow. From behind the pillow, Bear heard laughters. Bear knew that Little Lion was probably rolling on the floor by that time. Then Bear heard Mama Lion said:

“Apa kamu ni? Kayak anak kecil aja…”

(What is it with you? You are like a little boy…)

… and she continued laughing.

By that time, Bear wished that he was invisible. Bear could feel that his face was all red. Peeking from the pillow, Bear said:

“Kalau boleh nanti saya bawa orang tua saya and family datang…”

(If there is no objection, I’ll bring me family later…)

Then only Papa Lion started to say something and went on to give his advice about being married and living together as a family. It was a long session but useful. Then Papa Lion excused himself since he had to work the next day.

That was it! Bear had officially proposed to Little Lion and her family had accepted the proposal. Bear was very happy that night and let a sigh of relief while Little Lion wiped the sweats from Bear’s face. It was a hot night indeed. Only then Little Lion told Bear about the supposed to be script when asking for someone’s daughter… Bear had no idea…

Anyway, that night was the beginning of a new chapter in the life of the Berry Bear and Little Lion.

Before going to bed, Bear hugged Little Lion for a long moment, as if not wanting to let go. It was time to move on and we would do it together. Good night my Little Lion…

to be continued…

Asking For Her Hand: Part 3 – A Long Morning

Posted on the February 24th, 2006 under Out and About by

February 19, 2006. Bear woke up to the call for prayer. It was the alarm clock in the room that performed the Adzan that woke Bear up. Bear got out of the room to perform the subuh prayer with Papa and Mama Lion but they were not there. Bear messaged Little Lion and she believed that Bear was too late. Bear didn’t go back to sleep like Bear used to do at home but sat around the porch. Bear remembered that Little Lion once said Papa Lion would not let her sleep after the prayer. It was still a long wait before Little Lion would arrive in Dumai. Bear missed Little Lion very much that morning, just like any other morning without Little Lion around.

Soon Mama Lion called Bear in to have some tea with Papa Lion. Papa Lion had already toasted some breads for Bear. Bear knew that the next attempt to talk about Little Lion would be later so Bear just enjoyed the morning tea with some toasted breads topped with margerine. Papa Lion had a golf tournament that morning. So, after tea Papa Lion asked Bear to follow him along with Ranto who would be dropping him at the golf course. Bear did not have time to shower and jumped into the panther with Papa Lion and Ranto. Luckily Bear still smelled good!

An alien in Dumai

After dropping Papa Lion at the golf course, Ranto took Bear around the Pertamina complex at the Bukit Datuk (Tucin). That morning, Bear was shown the house where Little Lion used to stay, her schools as well as the supposed to be the longest rows of volleyball courts in Asia… or was it the world… Bear was not sure. Then, we went off to town where Ranto bought some Soto Medan for a second round of breakfast for Bear and the rest at home.

The Soto Medan great. Soon after that Bear thought of taking a shower but before Bear could do that, Mama Lion had asked Bear to follow her to the wet market in town. Bear used to go to the market with Mama Bear whenever Bear went back to his hometown. Therefore, Bear did not feel awkward and happily agreed to go. When we got there, Mama Lion Asked Bear to wait in the panther with Ranto. How could Bear resist a market in a foreign land? Bear got down from the panther followed by the surprised Ranto, who was supposed to ensure the safety of Bear.

Bear saw Mama Lion walking fast cutting through the morning crowd and Bear followed on with Ranto trailing not far behind. Finally Bear saw Mama Lion stopped at one of the stalls and Bear sneaked to her left. The seller looked at Bear and spontaneously, Mama Bear turned her head to the same direction. She was shocked to see Bear standing there… So, in the end, Ranto and Bear followed Mama Lion shopping at the market.

After coming back from the market, Bear thought of taking the shower again. But then, Om Dodi walked out of his room and Bear joined him at the dining table, accompanying him to eat his Soto Medan. Then Om Dodi asked Bear whether Bear wanted to follow him to town for some Dumai coffee. Bear said yes and scrapped the idea of taking a shower.

The coffee shop reminded Bear of his own childhood where Mama Bear used to run a restaurant back then. The type of cup and saucer used there was exactly what Mama Bear used to have during those old days. Om Dodi was supposed to meet his friend there and while waiting Om Dodi suggested that we have some Mee Pangsit (some kind of soupy noodles) so that Bear would know what it is. So, we ordered a half serving each and it was not bad at all. After finishing the noodles, Bear’s tummy was filled to the brim. After meeting Om Dodi’s friend, we went home.

At that time, Little Lion, who was still in Jakarta, was busy protesting about Bear who had not taken his shower yet. Lucky for Bear. If Little Lion were here, she would have given Bear some bites. That would be fun!

Since there was nothing much going on, Bear finally took his shower.

Lunch time came and Bear was getting more and more excited about the arrival of Little Lion. Mama Bear cooked lunch and Bear loved her cooking especially the Ikan Danau (some kind of small fish that were deep fried with green chillies) dish. Bear love fish and so Bear filled his tummy to the brim again.

1:45 pm, Mama Lion, Ranto and Bear went to the airport to pick Little Lion up. Mama Lion knew a lot of people at the airport and Bear just sat quietly beside her. Then came the announcement that Little Lion’s flight was delayed. Ranto went off to pick Papa Lion from the golf course and Bear stayed at the airport, chatting away with Mama Lion.

Finally, at 3:00+ pm the plane landed.
