The King of Fruits

durianA friend from Singapore came for a visit and insisted that he have durians before going back. So, on the way to KLIA LCCT, we stopped at a roadside durian stall where at that time a truck was busy unloading fresh durians. He was really excited to see the truck and durians!

He is a durian fanatic and therefore, I let him make the choice and true enough, he got us two of the best durians that I have ever had in my life. By the way, if you didn’t know, we had the durians opened and eaten on the spot and that is the best way to eat them.

For those who have no idea what durian is, here is a definition from Merriam-Webster:

Main Entry:
du·ri·an
Pronunciation:
\?du?r-?-?n, -?-?än also ?dyu?r-\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Malay
Date:
1588
1 : a large oval tasty but foul-smelling fruit with a prickly rind
2 : an East Indian tree (Durio zibethinus) of the silk-cotton family that bears durians

Why is it regarded as the king of fruits? This is what you can read on Wikipedia:

The edible flesh emits a distinctive odour, strong and penetrating even when the husk is intact. Regarded by some as fragrant, others as overpowering and offensive, the smell evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust. The odour has led to the fruit’s banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in Southeast Asia.

The smell and the taste is something that you would either love or hate and there is no two ways about it. I have watched one of the Fear Factor shows where one of the things that the contestants had to eat were durians. That somehow put it in the same league as some squirmy worms and such and that is really unbelievable.

If you give me $1 million, I would not be able to eat those yucky worms but I would definitely win if only have to eat durians. In other words – hate it or love it!

By the way, driving in an air conditioned car after eating durians is definitely not recommended… Just open the windows instead and you would be fine. Nevertheless, those were really superb durians that we had!
