seat belt

Updated 8/12/2008 2320 hours!

I read on the Saturday (6/12/2008) Star newspaper that the driver of the car or the fourth person who has no seat belt to wear at the rear seat will not be fined although the law is there after taking into consideration the rest of the factors involved.

*** updated ***

Come 1st January 2009, Malaysians are required by law to wear the rear seat belts while traveling in a car. I have nothing against that law as it is for our safety and bla bla bla… The law states that all the rear passenger of a car must wear the safety belts and therefore, it is against the law to carry more than three people in your back seat since there are only three seat belts available.

Now, this is the thing that hit me. Like being hit by a balloon filled of water. It’s not painful yet a bit unpleasant and made me wet…

What about those family who has four kids? Let’s say they are aged 5, 6, 7 and 8 years old. Are you going to leave one at home just because of the new law? What happened to the family holidays and Cuti Cuti Malaysiathat the government has been eagerly promoting? They would tell you go buy an MPV or get a second car. Or worse still, just leave one behind…

They don’t care. Those people who got together and come up with this law don’t care. They are one of those who are provided with a car by the government and with their fat salaries and “other” incomes, they can then by a big fat MPV for their wives. Why should they care?

If the price of an MPV is as cheap as a Proton Saga then may be that would make some senses but you can wait until the cat plays the fiddle and the cow jumps over the moon since that is not going to happen. Not in this lifetime for sure… Imagine if that happens… You can then buy a Perodua Kancil for a price of a motorbike…

When later you start reading news about how an 8 year old child died after being left alone since there was not enough seat belts in the car or a 6 year old got kidnapped while taking the bus alone, due to no more seat belt in the car, so that she can join her parents somewhere, you will start pointing finger to the authorities… But, the problem is always that when you point a finger, there will always be at least three other fingers pointing back at you. Try point your finger to someone now and you would see what I mean. You just can’t win. Even when the little dog laughs when the dish runs away with spoon, You still can’t win…

So what can you do? If you can’t afford an MPV or a second car, do not make more than 3 children. You can forget about your extended families as they do not have seat belts reserved for them anymore. Grandpa and Grandma can no longer join the fun… You can also choose to use our “world class” public transportation system to go around with you whole family. Which world is our world class referring to again? Well those are just some ways that I can suggest to you. Think about other ways yourself please….

Why is the rear seat belt very important? It is the same principle as the seat belt on an airplane. It does not really save you but in an event when your plane is going down, you would not be bouncing everywhere and messing up the whole cabin with your blood and etc. You keep the mess to your own seat. The same goes to the rear seat belt in the car as well. You would not see something like the picture above anymore. Neater, isn’t it?

Well it doesn’t hurt me yet as I only have one child and today is Friday. So, hey didle didle, have a good weekends and Salam Aidil Adha. That dies not rhyme… So, sue me!

me too. i am not against the law. i like it actually. But its not practical in Malaysia. give us better public transport, better road, low price MPV that has lower fuel consumptions and maybe then i consider this is a good rules and regulation.

The truth is safety on the road rely much on the driver than the passenger. Apart from that, planning is a must in driving and before driving check all your vehicle.

Hmm…. we already have that law a long time ago over here in Singapore. Used to be very strict… Now not so.. But well, come to think of it.. It’s all about safety..

But then again, our rule is quite flexible with kids.. There’s a max of 5 people in the car but can be more if there are young passengers.. Prolly, our laws will be about the same.. =)

    Salam,

Been a long time since I commented on your blog (well, since the old days anyways).

To me, it is a case of now or never. It isn’t easy passing a rule like this. More so with the turbulence of our political scenes and whatnots. Those not in favour with the gomen may even go to the extent of saying things like “Bodoh punya undang2, tak reti nak faham kesusahan rakyat” and so on and so forth. But, the behind the scenes for this, is from research done by a reputable team of researchers, not some sloppy gimmick thingamajig conjured up by any politic hot shot.

There have been quite a misunderstanding in the form of penalized form for those having more than 3 children. You wont get penalized for having more than five kids at the back (read: kids, not adults k). The rule still states that if there are 3 rear seat-belts, all must be used. Bringing an extra passenger is of course at the risk taken by whoever is driving and whoever is willing to be in the vehicle.

Malaysians have a long way to go before putting safety first in our daily life. We take things for granted far to often that a lot of us fail to see when something good is passed onto us. Bukan senang nak menjadi senang.

(I’m still trying to figure out a fool-proof way of getting the people to see how I myself was shown, on putting safety first)

takpe. kalau pakai tak kene saman. kalau ada 4 orang kat belakang. 3 orang tu mesti pakai. yg sorang tu biarla. tapi once kene tangkap tak pakai tali pinggang, memang cari pasal la..

tak kesahla. bagi aku mende ni ada kebaikkan. nyawa bukan leh dibeli bukan? tali pinggang kita boleh beli lagi..

This post is really good. I don’t actually thought about it before; since we are a small family and five of us (mum dad and 2 other brothers ) rarely on the same car together at the same time. So, there is none issue arise. We only talk about it when the government wanted to give ‘fake’ tickets for those who do not wear the rear sit belts. Hehe

In my own opinion, I am not opposing the law. And I still not sure how to react when I read your post, but I IM my friends and he said that the law is only for the three behind passengers. The forth one is excluded to wear it. Not sure though what is the validity of this news since he heard it on the radio :)

Ohh.. what a pain… rear seatbelts… even though I know it’s for our own safety. Some say that the late Princess Diana would have had a better chance of survival if only she had worn a seatbelt (and she was sitting at the rear passenger seat, of course).

Sounds kind of silly to me. I agree…what are you supposed to do if you have more than 3 children? Buy an extra car? I’m sure they meant well, but this law surely was not well thought out.

My car is a Proton Saga from the year of 1989…

    Nah!

    It’s older than 10 years…
Now the air conditioner is not cold anymore, more like fan to me…

    It doesn’t even have a rear wiper…

Apatah lagi the rear safety belt…

So how this law goes for my car?

Nah… I think this law will be dismissed…

Remember the rumors that they want to make a new law sometimes ago?

Where a car that is older than 15 years old cannot run on road anymore?
It triggered anger among the Malaysian… And they dismissed it and never heard about it anymore…

Government is trying to copy cat other country law…
But they(the law maker) never think…
    Malaysian is not the same!

sorry late reply but i know by now you must have realized that you need to install safety belts for the backseats unless your car is manufactured before a certain year.
