Shoes and Bush

shoes thrown at bushThey are the hottest words in the news today and they have  nothing to do with buying shoes as Christmas present or anything to do with shoe fetishism… The bush that appears in the title has nothing to do with shrub or anything related to low woody perennial plant usually having several major stems or anything similar to that…

We are talking about the President of the United States here. It is about George W. Bush, who is supposed to be or claimed to be the most powerful man (in the absence of Superman, Spiderman, Cicakman and other superheroes) in the world that had recently been given an unofficial flying-shoe-farewell by an Iraqi reporter.

It was not a simple “ceremony” that we can just forget after a few days as we are talking about about an event that includes two throws, two ducks (not the quacking type), two flying size 10 shoes,  a room packed with surprised witnesses and a humiliation on a worldwide scale.

It is something that every blogger must post in his or her blog to mark one of the _________ (fill up the blank with a: greatest  b: funniest   c: worst  d: use your own word) historical moments in 2008! What a perfect timing that was as we are about to leave 2008 behind…

Below is a video that you must watch to see  how Bush were attacked by the the shoes wielding reporter!

This is what his brother said:

Dhirgham al-Zaidi, who sometimes worked as his brother’s cameraman, described the reporter’s hatred for the “material American occupation” and the “moral Iranian occupation.”

Muntadhar al-Zaidi’s feelings were influenced by watching the agony suffered by everyday Iraqis. Most of the reporter’s stories focused on Iraqi widows, orphans, and children, said the brother.

Sometimes the 29-year-old journalist would cry. Moved by the tales he reported of poor families, he sometimes asked his colleagues to give money to them. On most nights, he returned to his home in central Baghdad — one of the country’s most violent slums and the epicenter of several of the war’s pitched battles.

Dhirgham al-Zaidi said he is “proud” of his brother whose act, while rash, was a statement of behalf of “millions” of other Iraqis. Dhirgham said the shoe throwing was “Iraq’s reaction” to the war and years of U.S. sanctions against Iraq before the conflict began. The reporter was not motivated for personal reasons, or because he has “anything against the American people,” he said.

ps:
I have nothing against the American People in general. In fact those Americans that I personally know are decent, friendly and helpful people. Hopefully Obama would bring a new beginning to the U.S especially in the eye of many other countries in the world.

My thanks and admiration to this journalist for expressing the sentiments of most people in the world. In stark contrast to US journalism whose anemic, indifferent and incompetent questioning have let Bush get away with murder… literally !

Silence for the journalistic community in the US is much more contemptible that this spontaneous outburst of protest.

It’s great that “the world” feels this way, and back the shoe-thrower. The US Army, Marines and Navy fighting men and women should all throw their shoes as their transports leave: Iraq, Afghanistan and the entire middle east. Let the muslims kill EACH OTHER over religious and tribal differences, why should “the world” intervene. Now that Saddam won’t be torturing “reporters” for speaking out see if he can survive WITHOUT the US’s aid.

    papabear replied:

You should have said why should the US and not the world intervene… btw, what change has the US brought to Iraq and have you ever wondered why the US did not do anything for Africa where they are killing each other too?

Funny from an American point, because to quote ‘Austin Powers,’ “Really, who throws a shoe!” But, from a cultural point of view the throwing of the shoe goes all the way back to Moses in the act of a male divorcing his wife at the front gates. Yet, it carried connotations say, “She’s a whore.”

Anyway you look at it, it was a personal violent act that the man could do. I can promise you, had it been the other way around. The dignitary in the USA would not have been insulted and violently acted upon in such a way.

As an US citizen, and according to our Forefathers I am personally insulted and attacked, because if you attack the President, according to our government and culture, you attack each and every US citizen personally, regardless of our political stand. That is the way our government was formed. The President, regardless of politics represents the people. Read the US Constitution!

I don’t care who you are, show everyone respect. All I can say is that D* n Mother F** *r is lucky he doesn’t live in the US. Because, I would personally find a way to make peace with him, from my country to his. If I was that guy, I’d be watching my back and my family’s back.

    Reply

    papabear replied:

I do understand what you are saying here but respect goes both ways and Bush showed respect to the Iraqi people by attacking their country and as you said it was a personal act against a person he hates… How would you feel if you are in the Iraqi’s shoes when another country came and invaded your country looking for weapons that did not exist? Anyway, just like everyone else, we are entitled to our own opinion and there would always be to sides to a coin. Cheers!

Personally, I would feel the same rage on Bush if it were me involved in the war. Maybe I didn’t die from all the bombings and the interrogations and stuff but seeing the women and children, even the men who may not even have any links to me whatsoever, become victims to the war, that we can see is just pointless actually, not only wasting money but also the lives of innocent people (both Iraqi citizens and US troops), wouldn’t any human feel if not much, at least a little resentment? Still, I wouldn’t throw a shoe.

Lucky nobody threw things that could kill him. And he managed to duck anyways. So, he should go home, and pray for forgiveness for all the innocent lives lost due to his decision and that he’s still alive.
