My English Teachers
Back in the late 70s, English was thought as only one of the subjects in school, pretty much what it is currently. Somehow, the 1 hour class a day was not enough for me as I felt that there were way too many things to learn about the language. The insufficient time in regular classes and the desire to be part of the elite English Club in school, drove me to seek more avenues to learn English.
Luckily for me, I found a place that, nobody had ever thought, would provide such great teachers, that eventually put me on par with the best in school. Once a month, I would frequent a little bookshop, located right next to the main entrance of the Kuala Lipis train station, right across the ticket counters. That place has long gone now…
There was something special about that bookshop. It was the only bookshop in the whole small town of Kuala Lipis that brought over the best English teachers all the way from the United Kingdom. My imported English teachers would be in town at least once a month. Those moments were among the few escapes that I had from the humdrums of growing up in a small town.
Meet my best English teachers. They came fully imported all the way from the UK. It was costly for me to get one of these back them. I had to save lots of my daily school allowance just to buy this every month. The bookshop only ordered limited copies for a few regular customers. I remember that there were only two copies. I wonder who ordered the other one.
Believe it or not, I learned lots of English from The Beano. The characters from this comic thought me more English than all my real life school English teachers combined. Not to say that they were no good but as mentioned earlier, the times that we had were limited. Furthermore, it was them who gave me the basics to read that comic in the first place.
I remembered reading my Beano from one page to another all the way to the last page and then repeated the whole thing from the first page over and over again until I fully understand what the contents were all about.
Among my favorite English teachers were Dennis the Menace, The Bash Street Kids, Billy Whizz, Minnie the Minx and The Numskulls…
Fortunately or unfortunately, English was not the only thing that I learned from it. If you are familiar with, for example, Dennis the Menace, then you should have a fair idea on what else that I managed to pick up while learning English…
It’s really nice to take a walk down memory lane sometimes…
P/s:
Nowadays, Pasha learned most of his English from Playhouse Disney and I have to say that it is a more “controlled” contents..

Reading comics is indeed a good option for kids to learn a language.. But also watching English tv programs for kids as you already mentioned.
However kids will always pick up a language better then adults.. They’re really like a “sponge” they absorb things so fast, unbelievable!

terima kasih. I had to take on BI out of need. The top criteria to be selected for oversea scholarship during my time was the command of English. Then only they look at your maths and science subjects. While some people had to spend hours in the interview room, my session was lasted for less then 30 minutes and I only got to answer 1 question in English. So, it was worth learning it.

was born there, primary school there, lower secondary school there as well.. As for Dennis, I gained English and a menacing reputation.. English kept me in the elite class and the menacing part kept me off the good stuffs such as having the word “Pengawas” in my school leaving cert.. hehe.. In short, managed to give some dilemmas to the teachers for 6 good years..
